Who is Jarne?

I’m Jarne! I’m originally from Belgium, but I have lived in the U.S. since I was a kid.

I started my journey with game and software development in 2016. My love of video games and always being the IT expert around the house are key reasons why I wanted to gain a further understanding of software and the process behind it.

The University of Idaho is where my education began, enrolling in the Virtual Technology and Design program. There, I gained insight into many design philosophies, 3D modeling fundamentals, and the importance of presentation. I found myself mostly focusing on 3D modeling and animation here, which left me feeling like I was missing a thorough understanding of how software actually works.

After a short break, I found myself switching gears to Boise State University’s Games, Interactive Media, and Mobile program. This is where I learned more about the coding side of software development. Gaining the ability to code made the design process so much easier for me. I now understand the logic behind what I am trying to do and I can use that to guide decisions for designing.

All of this experience has made me a very well rounded developer. Having a background in multiple areas of design and development means that I have the experience to work with other artists and developers with ease.

Some close friends and I are currently trying to make a new studio in Boise, Torchfire Studios. For this studio, I am the Lead Systems Designer. This means that I am responsible for designing, developing, and fine tuning all gameplay systems. I lead a team of 6 developers where I give direction, offer coding assistance, and review code before all pushes. I work closely with our Game Director and Project Manager to update them on my team’s progress and discuss game direction.

Outside of development, I spend my time playing volleyball, video games, D&D, Magic the Gathering, competing in fighting game tournaments, watching TV shows & anime, and hanging out with my wife & our friends.
